Macaroni Kid Hike: A Bike Hike at the Ashokan Reservoir

By Jenna Slade - Macaroni Kid Saugerties et. al. April 1, 2021

tThis week we decided to bike on our hike! But the trail would be great on foot as well.  We visited the Ashokan Rail Trail

Ashokan Rail Trail - Dike Trailhead

NYS Route 28 – Woodstock

A beautiful afternoon was upon us and the kids had begged all week to go for a bike ride.   I did a quick tire pump up and loaded them up in the trunk (the bikes not the kids).  We were headed to check out the Ashokan Rail Trail!  Just down route 28 in Woodstock you will see the Dike Trailhead parking lot. The parking lot was crowded, but big enough that we had plenty of spaces to choose from.  We parked right near the trail kiosk and portapotties.
No trails to choose from here, but you can check out the map and decide how far you want to walk, run or ride!

The trail was nice and wide, which was great when we were alone and could spread out, and perfect for when it got crowded and we needed to pass or keep distance from other families.

Such a pretty view looking over the reservoir with a mountain backdrop.

Along the trail there were some rest areas with benches and a teepee for the kids to explore!

We road out about 2-3 miles before turning around and heading back.   We can't wait to head back again!
If you are interested in how I tote along my 3 year old, we use a "Tyke Toter" and he loves it!  I found it when I thought I had a great idea, googled it and it already existed (you can read my almost invention story below)

(I was out with the three kids, #1 on her 2 wheeler, #2 on her very slow training wheel bike and #3 in the baby seat.  #1 got too far ahead and #2 was slowing us down.... I had a mom panic and convinced myself that #1 either got stolen or rode off a cliff, but couldn't race to catch up bc of #2 not riding fast enough, and I couldn't chance her riding off a cliff too.... So I ditched her bike and plopped her in front of me with her butt on the top tube and her feet on the bottom tube.  She thought it was so cool, but it was pretty uncomfortable... As soon as I got home I decided to see if my panic bike seat invention existed... and it did, and I even found one on the facebook yard sale site. Everyone was safe, my crazy mom panic faded, #1 had no idea anything even happened, and we went back for #2's bike.)
