Macaroni Kid Hike: Saugerties Lighthouse

By Jenna Slade - Macaroni Kid Saugerties et. al. February 5, 2021

Need some new or forgotten places to take a mom break or get the kids out of the house for some exercise?  Check out some of our favorite places!

This week we visit the Saugerties Lighthouse Trail

Saugerties Lighthouse

168 Lighthouse Dr, Saugerties, NY 12477

We were so excited to see the trail has opened back up at the Saugerties Lighthouse.  The Lighthouse and riverside deck are closed until further notice.
The Lighthouse trail is a great little walk when you don't have the time to be hiking all day.  It is a short half mile to the end of the trail.

Parking is located just past the Coast Guard Station.  Here you will see the trailhead and gate to enter Lighthouse trail.

There are a few bridges, with and without safety rails.  Enjoy them!  Check out the mini streams running through underneath.  Can you spot any fish?  In the winter the tides form some neat frozen sections!

The end of the trail (half a mile walk) you will reach the lighthouse.  During low tide, there will be a beachy area you may walk out on.  During high tide, the water will surround the path and you may have to walk through it at certain points, if you wish to continue on.  Dress warm, because the wind tends to kick it up a notch at the deck.  Watch for passing ships, barges and trains!  Maybe if you're lucky you will spot a seal!
The Saugerties Lighthouse trail is great in all seasons, but remember that it may be icy in the winter!  Don't forget to check the tide chart before heading out!  Parts of the trail do get flooded, so plan and dress accordingly!

Remember to always respect the world around you, including people, our trails and the wildlife living along the trail.  Do you have a favorite spot to hike or take a stroll?  Email me at JennaS@macaronikid.com
